A Canadian man was arrested in his Chiang Mai hotel room on Tuesday night, hours before he planned to leave Thailand. Aldo Guiovanni Ochoa Saenz, 38, was wanted on a provincial court warrant for raping a British tourist. She reported being raped after drinking with friends, including the Canadian, on September 13. A hospital examination followed as police gathered evidence and secured the warrant. Meanwhile, the British Consulate contacted Tourist Police. The hunt intensified after investigators found travel plans on Ochoa Saenz’s phone showing a Wednesday morning departure. Tourist Police and Mae Ping officers tracked him to a central Chiang Mai hotel and moved in at 11 pm.
A 38-year-old Canadian man was arrested in Chiang Mai on Tuesday night, hours before his planned departure from Thailand. Police moved into his central Chiang Mai hotel after securing a provincial court warrant for rape involving a British tourist. The late-night operation capped a fast-moving nine-day investigation into an incident reported by the British woman. It began on September 13 while she was travelling in Chiang Mai. That night, she was socialising with a group of friends which included Ochoa Saenz. The group drank alcohol together before the incident, which later triggered the criminal investigation.
Afterwards, the woman went to Mae Ping Police Station and reported that she had been raped. Investigators formally received her complaint and began gathering evidence surrounding the events that night. Meanwhile, the British Consulate in Chiang Mai became involved. Consular officials contacted Tourist Police concerning the British tourist’s complaint.
Police secure rape warrant after hospital examination as Canadian prepares to leave Thailand hours later
As part of the investigation, police arranged for the woman to undergo a physical examination at a hospital. Investigators also assembled evidence required to take the case before a court. Thereafter, police presented their evidence to Chiang Mai Provincial Court and applied for an arrest warrant. The court granted the application.
Crucially, the resulting warrant was for rape rather than simply questioning over a sexual assault complaint. The offence cited covers rape involving threats or violence. It also applies where the victim cannot resist. Additionally, the provision covers circumstances where someone is caused to mistake the offender for another person.
With the warrant secured, police prepared to arrest Ochoa Saenz. However, investigators then uncovered information that dramatically increased the urgency. Police examined information on the Canadian’s mobile telephone and found details of his travel plans. Those details showed that he intended to leave Thailand on Wednesday morning. Suddenly, officers had only hours to execute the court warrant.
Tourist Police Division 2 consequently joined Mae Ping investigators as the search intensified. Together, officers began tracking Ochoa Saenz through Chiang Mai. At the same time, they were working against a clear deadline. Their suspect was preparing to leave Thailand the following morning. The search soon led them to a hotel in central Chiang Mai.
Police raid central Chiang Mai hotel and arrest Canadian hours before his planned departure from Thailand
By Tuesday night, investigators had established where Ochoa Saenz was staying. Police therefore prepared an immediate operation to execute the warrant before he could leave Thailand. At approximately 11 pm, officers moved into the hotel and entered his room. They arrested the 38-year-old Canadian under the Chiang Mai Provincial Court warrant.
The timing was critical. Ochoa Saenz’s planned departure was only hours away. Instead of leaving Thailand on Wednesday morning, he was in police custody before midnight Tuesday. Officers subsequently removed him from the hotel and handed him to investigators at Mae Ping Police Station. There, the case entered its next stage under the provincial court warrant.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Avirut Sukyaem played a leading role in the Tourist Police operation. Pol Lt Col Avirut serves as an inspector with Sub-Division 2 of Tourist Police Division 2. Separately, the case came under Police Colonel Phitsanu Triamdee. He is the superintendent of Sub-Division 2 of Tourist Police Division 2. Their officers worked alongside Mae Ping investigators during the hunt and subsequent arrest.
The operation brought together several strands of an investigation stretching back nine days. Initially, the case centred on the September 13 gathering involving the British tourist. She was spending time with friends while visiting Chiang Mai, with Ochoa Saenz among the group. Alcohol was consumed before the incident at the centre of her subsequent complaint.
British tourist’s rape complaint leads police to court as Canadian’s travel plans increase urgency
In response, the woman approached Mae Ping Police Station and reported that she had been raped. Investigators then began building their case. Police arranged the hospital examination and gathered evidence concerning her account. In parallel, the British Consulate contacted Tourist Police after becoming involved in the case.
The criminal investigation remained with Thai police. Mae Ping investigators continued gathering the evidence required for further action. Subsequently, officers approached Chiang Mai Provincial Court and sought judicial authority to arrest the Canadian. The court approved their application and issued the warrant on the rape charge.
Notably, investigators had therefore taken evidence before the court before moving against Ochoa Saenz. That process became particularly important once police discovered his travel plans. Information on his mobile telephone showed that he intended to leave Thailand on Wednesday morning. Tuesday night therefore became the decisive period for executing the warrant.
At that stage, Tourist Police and Mae Ping investigators combined their efforts. Officers needed to locate Ochoa Saenz before his planned journey. Shortly afterwards, the trail led to the central Chiang Mai hotel. Police closed in during the evening, with the combined team ready to execute the provincial court warrant.

At approximately 11 pm, officers entered the hotel and reached Ochoa Saenz’s room. They then placed the Canadian under arrest. Within hours of his intended departure, he was under police control. Afterwards, officers transferred him directly to Mae Ping Police Station for further proceedings.
The arrest completed a rapid sequence of events following the British woman’s complaint. First, investigators received her account and arranged a hospital examination. Meanwhile, British consular officials contacted Tourist Police. Police then gathered evidence and placed the case before Chiang Mai Provincial Court. The court subsequently issued the rape warrant.
Then came the development that sharply accelerated the operation. Police discovered information showing that Ochoa Saenz was preparing to leave Thailand. Accordingly, investigators faced an immediate problem. Their suspect could leave the country within hours, while officers already possessed judicial authority for his arrest.
Police responded by accelerating efforts to locate him. Tourist Police Division 2 joined Mae Ping officers in tracing the Canadian through Chiang Mai. The investigation soon pinpointed his hotel. By Tuesday night, officers had the warrant, his location and information concerning his impending departure.

Consequently, police moved before Wednesday morning. The hotel operation culminated at approximately 11 pm when officers entered Ochoa Saenz’s room. They arrested him under the Chiang Mai Provincial Court warrant and took him into custody. His planned departure from Thailand was stopped only hours before it was due.
Several agencies played distinct roles as the case developed. Mae Ping Police Station received the woman’s complaint and handled the criminal investigation. Its investigators also arranged the hospital examination and gathered evidence. Meanwhile, the British Consulate coordinated with Tourist Police concerning the British national’s case.
Tourist Police Division 2 later joined efforts to locate and arrest Ochoa Saenz. Chiang Mai Provincial Court, in turn, provided the judicial authority required for the arrest. By Tuesday night, those strands had converged around the central Chiang Mai hotel. Police knew where Ochoa Saenz was staying and that he planned to leave Thailand.
Moreover, investigators were carrying a provincial court warrant for his arrest on the rape charge. The combination left officers with a narrow window. Police therefore acted before midnight rather than waiting until Wednesday morning. The operation ended with Ochoa Saenz under arrest and his planned departure stopped.

Following the arrest, officers transferred the Canadian to Mae Ping Police Station. Police said the case would proceed fairly for both the British complainant and Ochoa Saenz. The accusation now moves through Thailand’s criminal justice system, where no determination of guilt has been made.
Nevertheless, Tuesday night’s arrest marked a major procedural step in the nine-day investigation. Police had received the woman’s complaint and arranged her hospital examination. Investigators had also gathered evidence and taken their application before Chiang Mai Provincial Court. The court then authorised Ochoa Saenz’s arrest for rape.
