Beaches, massages and no work. American Michael Kane, 54, thought Koh Samui retirement was perfect. Then boredom struck after 18 months. His ฿500,000 dog-named café now thrives with Thai partner Yam. Yet he warns Thailand is no cheap retirement deal.
American businessman Michael Kane, 54, retired to Koh Samui at 48, bought a ฿6.2 million apartment and planned a life of leisure. However, paradise became boring after just 18 months. Instead, he invested ฿500,000 in a coffee shop named after his rescue dog, Izzy. Four years later, the café has become a popular attraction near Fisherman’s Village, run with his Thai partner, Paphaon Suwannathamma, known as Yam. The former US corporate executive has also secured a ten-year residency visa and work permit. Yet he warns that retirement in Thailand is neither cheap nor straightforward. Despite returning to America only once in six years, Kane is already restless again. With his café thriving, he is considering another business venture.

An American businessman who retired to Koh Samui at 48 became so bored that he returned to work after 18 months. Michael Kane, 54, had abandoned his American business career for Thailand’s beaches, massages and relaxed lifestyle.
However, permanent leisure quickly lost its appeal. Instead, he invested ฿500,000 in a coffee shop named after his rescue dog, Izzy. Four years later, the business has become a popular speciality café near Fisherman’s Village.
Today, he runs it with his Thai partner, Paphaon Suwannathamma, known as Yam. Yet the American is already considering another business venture.
American retiree’s boredom leads to a Koh Samui coffee shop named after his much-loved rescue dog
Kane’s retirement story emerged in an interview published by Business Insider on Tuesday, November 3. Thai news outlet Khaosod followed with its own report on Thursday, November 5. The American described how his carefully planned retirement ended in frustration.
After decades of corporate employment, he initially welcomed a life without professional responsibilities. Within 18 months, however, he was searching for another challenge.
The opportunity came through his former girlfriend’s small baking operation. She had begun making banana cakes and selling them around Koh Samui. Kane suggested renting premises and expanding production.
At the same time, he identified what he considered a gap in the island’s speciality coffee market. The resulting business opened in August 2022, beneath a century-old mango tree in Bophut.
The establishment takes its name from Izzy, Kane’s rescue dog. Since opening, the animal has become its mascot and a familiar attraction for customers. Meanwhile, the business has developed from a modest outdoor kiosk into an enclosed, air-conditioned café. Kane and his current Thai partner completed a major refurbishment earlier this year. The redesigned premises reopened on April 1, 2026.
Apartment purchase and long-term residency anchor an American businessman’s new life on Koh Samui
Behind the business lies a substantial financial commitment to Thailand. Kane purchased a two-bedroom apartment in Mae Nam for $186,100, approximately ฿6.2 million. He also secured long-term immigration status and subsequently obtained permission to work.
Notably, he acknowledges that Thailand is not necessarily the inexpensive retirement destination some foreigners expect. Legal residency and employment arrangements can also present difficulties.
Nevertheless, Kane has established a permanent home on Koh Samui. Since relocating in 2020, he has returned to the United States only once. That journey was to attend a funeral. His life remains centred on the island, although his appetite for business has returned.
Kane was born and raised in Orange County, Southern California. He began his working life in restaurants before moving into several other industries. These included software, construction, property, sales and marketing. In 1990, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. Thereafter, he spent much of the following three decades developing his American business career.
His professional background included senior corporate management responsibilities. According to his café’s official website, he previously served as chief marketing officer and executive vice-president of a publicly traded company.
Pandemic disrupts final US venture before extended Thailand visits lead to retirement on Koh Samui
These positions preceded his final American business venture, a dog daycare centre outside Atlanta. Kane established the operation after struggling to find suitable facilities for his own pet.
The timing proved difficult. The COVID-19 pandemic struck shortly before the business was due to open. Consequently, the venture faced disruption before operations had properly begun. Kane eventually succeeded in selling the business. By that stage, he had already developed a strong connection with Thailand through repeated visits.
Approximately ten years ago, a friend invited him to Thailand for a two-week holiday. The American enjoyed the country so much that he extended his visit to three months.
Subsequently, he began dividing his time between Thailand and the United States. Those visits gradually developed into a plan for permanent retirement. In 2020, aged approximately 48, he moved to Koh Samui.
Kane chose Mae Nam as his residential base and purchased a two-bedroom apartment. The property cost $186,100, equivalent to approximately ฿6.2 million at the reported exchange rate. Initially, he relied on a five-year Thailand Elite visa to remain in the country.
The immigration programme was subsequently renamed Thailand Privilege. His arrangements changed again following the introduction of Thailand’s Long-Term Resident visa programme in 2022.
Ten-year pensioner visa opens path to work as retirement on Koh Samui gives way to growing boredom
Kane switched to the ten-year Wealthy Pensioner category. According to his account, this immigration status enabled him to obtain a work permit. That permission allowed him to participate legally in his subsequent business activities.
Foreign nationals undertaking employment in Thailand must comply with applicable immigration and labour regulations. However, Kane has not disclosed the café’s corporate ownership structure, registered capital or foreign shareholding arrangements.
His original intention had been to leave commercial activity behind altogether. After decades of professional responsibilities, Koh Samui offered a completely different routine. He spent his days exploring beaches, enjoying massages and travelling around the island.
There were no corporate meetings, sales targets or employment deadlines. For approximately 18 months, the arrangement delivered the retirement he had planned.
Then the boredom set in. Kane had little interest in conventional retirement hobbies. Golf and fishing held no attraction, while painting and writing poetry were equally unappealing. Instead, he missed the satisfaction of developing a project and having professional responsibilities. The absence of work became increasingly difficult to accept.
Homemade banana cakes and a search for better coffee led to a new business beneath a mango tree
The turning point came when his girlfriend at the time began selling homemade banana cakes. A personal trainer, she prepared the products in their kitchen before selling them around Koh Samui.
Kane recognised an opportunity to expand the operation. He proposed renting a commercial space where ovens could be installed and production increased. The plan offered a straightforward route back into business.
Separately, Kane had become dissatisfied with the speciality coffee available on the island. He believed there was room for a business offering the quality he wanted. Accordingly, he began researching coffee beans, roasting techniques, recipes and specialist equipment.
His previous restaurant experience provided useful commercial knowledge. The original baking proposal gradually developed into a coffee shop.
The new establishment was named Izzy’s Coffee after his rescue dog. It opened on August 12, 2022, near Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. The first premises consisted of a small outdoor kiosk beneath a century-old mango tree. The location placed the business close to an established tourist area. Nevertheless, the original investment was modest compared with Kane’s apartment purchase.
American invests ฿500,000 in dog-friendly coffee kiosk as Izzy becomes the public face of the business
He disclosed initial expenditure of approximately ฿500,000. Construction of the kiosk cost ฿100,000, while equipment, furnishings and decorations accounted for another ฿400,000. The investment provided the basic facilities needed to begin trading.
Rather than establishing a full restaurant, Kane concentrated on speciality coffee. He developed the drinks menu himself and took a direct role in serving customers.
The café’s identity also developed around its canine namesake. Izzy regularly greeted visitors and appeared in the establishment’s branding and publicity. Customers were welcome to bring their own dogs. As a result, the business became associated with a dog-friendly atmosphere alongside its coffee offering. Kane and his partner even jokingly describe Izzy as the real boss.
The location near Fisherman’s Village helped attract tourists and expatriates. Meanwhile, Kane continued refining the menu and concentrating on customer service. The business gradually developed beyond its original roadside operation.
However, the outdoor premises exposed customers and staff to Koh Samui’s tropical weather. Heavy rainfall, intense heat and traffic noise presented continuing difficulties.
Thai partner brings hospitality experience as couple rebuild Koh Samui café with air conditioning
In response, Kane and his current Thai partner decided to refurbish the premises in 2026. Paphaon Suwannathamma, known as Yam, brought professional hospitality experience to the project. Her background includes public relations and work with Four Seasons properties in Thailand. The couple are identified as co-founders and owners on the café’s official website. Their professional responsibilities reflect their different backgrounds.
Kane concentrates on developing drinks and interacting with customers. Yam contributes her hospitality and public relations experience to the operation. Importantly, she is his current romantic and business partner.
She was not the former girlfriend whose banana-cake venture originally inspired the café. The distinction is significant to the chronology of the business’s development.
The refurbishment transformed the original outdoor kiosk into an enclosed speciality coffee shop. The redesigned establishment reopened on April 1, 2026. It features air conditioning, floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a bright yellow interior.
In addition, the design incorporates mid-century influences. The changes addressed the weather and traffic conditions affecting the original premises. The couple have not disclosed the renovation cost.
Thai Arabica coffee and strong online reviews support café as owner rejects plans for a large chain
Despite the physical changes, the café retained its original focus on speciality coffee. Its drinks use Thai Arabica beans sourced from northern Thailand. These are custom-roasted by Bangkok-based coffee specialist MPresso.
The menu includes the Latte Cloud, Sticky Date Latte, Honeycomb Caramel Latte and Samui Sunset. Alongside these drinks, the business continues promoting personalised service and its dog-friendly identity.
The establishment has also built a substantial online presence. According to its official website, Izzy’s has received more than 1,200 Google reviews with a five-star rating. That figure is the business’s own published claim.
Its customers include tourists, expatriates and visitors to the Fisherman’s Village area. However, Kane has disclosed no figures for annual revenue, operating profits or customer numbers.
Nor has he announced plans for major expansion. He has ruled out establishing a large coffee shop chain or franchising the business. Instead, he intends to retain the existing operation without developing an extensive network of outlets. The café also increasingly functions without requiring his constant involvement. That change has brought another unexpected development.
Restless again, American retiree considers another venture and warns of Thailand’s higher living costs
Kane is becoming restless again. Having abandoned retirement because he missed working, he is considering another commercial venture. The American has not disclosed the proposed industry, investment or timetable.
Nevertheless, his renewed interest comes four years after opening Izzy’s Coffee. The business that ended his retirement is becoming less demanding of his daily attention.
His latest account also addresses the financial realities of living in Thailand. Kane cautions that the country is not necessarily as inexpensive as some foreign retirees imagine. Housing and daily living expenses can involve substantial expenditure.
Furthermore, immigration requirements can complicate plans for permanent residence and employment. His own experience involved two different long-term visa arrangements.
Initially, Kane entered under the five-year Thailand Elite programme. Following the introduction of the Long-Term Resident scheme, he switched to the ten-year Wealthy Pensioner category. He subsequently obtained a work permit after deciding to establish his business.
These arrangements formed part of his transition from retirement to commercial activity. However, he has not disclosed his current living expenses or the full cost of maintaining his immigration status.
Apartment, café investment and family visits show American retiree’s lasting commitment to Thailand
The financial details available are limited but substantial. His Koh Samui apartment cost $186,100, approximately ฿6.2 million. The original coffee shop required another ฿500,000.
Separately, the 2026 refurbishment involved additional expenditure that has not been disclosed. Kane has also provided no public figures for the café’s registered capital, staffing costs or profitability.
Despite these expenses and administrative requirements, Kane says Thailand feels like home. His personal circumstances underline the extent of his relocation. Since moving permanently to Koh Samui in 2020, he has visited the United States only once. That trip was for a funeral. Otherwise, he has remained based in Thailand while maintaining connections with his former American family.
His former wife has visited Koh Samui with her new husband. In addition, his former father-in-law has travelled to Thailand twice.
Kane regards the older man as a father figure. These visits have allowed him to maintain personal relationships without returning to live in America. His present life centres on his Koh Samui apartment, the coffee business and his relationship with Yam.
Monsoon closure precedes December reopening as Izzy’s Coffee marks four years of business on Samui
The café itself is temporarily closed for its annual monsoon break. According to its official website, the closure began on October 15 and continues until December 1. The establishment is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, December 2, at 9 am.
Its normal operating hours are 9 am to 5 pm, excluding Tuesdays. The premises remain near Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, Koh Samui, Surat Thani province.
The November interview comes more than four years after Kane opened the original kiosk in August 2022. Since then, the business has undergone a major refurbishment and developed a distinctive identity around its rescue-dog mascot. The operation also involves a new business partnership with Yam, whose hospitality experience supports its daily management.

Kane’s career has therefore moved through several distinct stages. He worked across multiple American industries, established a dog daycare business and retired to Thailand in 2020. Within 18 months, he had become dissatisfied with permanent leisure. Subsequently, a homemade banana-cake operation led him into speciality coffee. His initial ฿500,000 investment produced a business that continues operating four years later.
Yet the American has no plans to turn Izzy’s into a national chain. He has rejected franchising and extensive expansion while allowing the existing operation to become more independent. At 54, he is instead considering another business project. For the moment, he remains on Koh Samui with Yam, running the café named after his rescue dog.
