One shot killed a 32-year-old Ranger as his patrol set up a temporary security base in Narathiwat on Sunday evening. Volunteer Ranger Sukran Lateh was taking off his backpack when the bullet tore into his chest at Ban Kuching Ruepa. His comrades rushed him for emergency treatment, but severe internal injuries proved fatal. By Monday, the gunman remained at large, with no weapon identified and no arrest announced. The deadly strike came just two months after five Rangers were killed at a checkpoint in the same Rangae district. However, officials have established no link. at this time, between the attacks.
A single gunshot killed a 32-year-old Ranger during a security operation in Narathiwat on Sunday evening. Volunteer Ranger Sukran Lateh was shot in the chest as his patrol prepared a temporary base in Rangae district.
He was removing his backpack and equipment when the bullet struck him. Fellow Rangers immediately evacuated him for emergency treatment. However, Sukran suffered severe internal injuries and later died. The killing came two months after five Rangers died in another attack in the same district.
The latest shooting occurred at about 6.30 pm on September 27. Sukran was a rifleman with Ranger Company 4515 of the 45th Ranger Regiment Task Force. He came from Sakor subdistrict in Su-ngai Padi district, Narathiwat. At the time, his unit was operating around Ban Kuching Ruepa in Chaloem subdistrict.

Specifically, the patrol was working under the “Rangae Protection 456935” security plan. Its mission covered reconnaissance, checks and pressure operations inside a designated target area. Sergeant Supachai Rakasatt reportedly commanded the mobile patrol. The unit moved into Ban Kuching Ruepa before preparing a temporary patrol position.
After reaching the area, the Rangers began unloading equipment and establishing their base. Sukran was removing his backpack and personal belongings. Then, without warning, the soldiers heard a single gunshot. The bullet struck Sukran in the chest, with reports placing the wound near his lower chest and ribs.
Immediately afterwards, the patrol commander and other Rangers moved to investigate. They found Sukran seriously wounded at the position. His colleagues provided emergency assistance before rapidly moving him from the area. He was then evacuated for urgent medical treatment.
Despite those efforts, the bullet had caused severe damage to vital organs. Sukran later died from his injuries. No other casualties were reported in the initial accounts. Nor was there any reported prolonged exchange of gunfire.
Security forces secure scene as investigators seek attacker behind single fatal shot at mobile patrol
In response, security forces secured the immediate area and inspected the surrounding ground. Units also increased precautions while operating around the scene. Investigators began gathering physical evidence and information about the shooting. Yet the weapon’s type and calibre remained unknown.
Separately, officials had not publicly identified an attacker by Monday morning. No arrest had been announced. Investigators were instead working to establish how the single shot was fired. They were also seeking information that could identify those responsible.
The Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward Command subsequently confirmed Sukran’s death. It said the circumstances surrounding the attack remained under investigation. In parallel, security personnel continued operations around Ban Kuching Ruepa while investigators examined evidence from the scene.
Notably, the shooting targeted a mobile patrol rather than a permanent military installation. Sukran and his colleagues were conducting an active field operation. They had entered the area for reconnaissance and security work. Moreover, the Rangers were still preparing their temporary position when the shot was fired.
Initial accounts indicate the attack was sudden and brief. Only one gunshot was reported before Sukran was discovered wounded. There was no reported sustained firefight. Likewise, reports did not describe an exchange of gunfire between the patrol and the attacker.
Investigators probe firing position as July checkpoint attack returns focus to violence in Rangae
Instead, Sukran was struck while unloading equipment from his back. His fellow Rangers immediately concentrated on getting him medical assistance. At the same time, other personnel secured the patrol position and surrounding ground. Investigators then began reconstructing the sequence immediately before the shooting.
As part of this work, investigators were seeking evidence concerning the gunman’s firing position. The available reports did not identify where the shot originated. They also did not establish the distance between Sukran and the attacker. Furthermore, officials had not identified the firearm used.
Several other details remained unresolved by Monday morning. The number of people involved in the attack had not been disclosed. Likewise, the precise size of the Ranger patrol was not stated. No suspect had been publicly named, while no arrest had been reported.
The attack returned attention to Rangae district following another deadly assault there on July 22. On that occasion, armed attackers struck the Bukit Sami checkpoint. Five Rangers were killed, while six civilians were injured.
Following that attack, security operations intensified across parts of Narathiwat. Investigators later examined weapons recovered during operations around the Tawe mountain area. Those weapons were subsequently linked to several attacks across Thailand’s southern border provinces.
No link established to July checkpoint attack as welfare procedures begin for slain Ranger’s family
Crucially, officials have announced no direct connection between the July attack and Sukran’s killing. The two incidents also differed markedly in their reported scale. The July incident involved armed attackers striking a checkpoint. By contrast, Sunday’s initial accounts described one shot targeting a mobile patrol.
There was also no reported sustained gunfire during Sunday’s attack. Rather, the Rangers heard a single shot before finding Sukran critically wounded. His unit then shifted immediately from establishing its position to evacuating its injured rifleman.
Meanwhile, security personnel remained at the scene to prevent further attacks and preserve evidence. Investigators inspected the area while other personnel maintained security. The search for information about the attacker continued after Sukran was taken for treatment.
On another front, Sukran’s death triggered official procedures for personnel killed during operations in the southern border provinces. The 32-year-old was serving as a rifleman when he was killed. His unit subsequently began processing the required procedures following his death.
ISOC Region 4 Forward Command also said welfare arrangements were being made for Sukran’s family. In addition, official benefits were being processed following his death on duty. Sukran was from Narathiwat and was serving in the same province when he was killed.
Key questions remain over fatal shot as investigators reconstruct Ranger patrol’s final movements
By Monday morning, however, the central questions surrounding the attack remained unanswered. Investigators had not publicly established the attacker’s identity. The firing position remained undisclosed, while the weapon and calibre had not been identified.
Even so, initial reports provided a detailed account of the minutes immediately before the attack. The Rangers had moved into Ban Kuching Ruepa on their assigned reconnaissance mission. They then began preparing a temporary patrol base within the operational area.
At that stage, Sukran started unloading his backpack and personal equipment. The patrol was still establishing its position. A single gunshot then broke the operation. Sukran was struck in the chest and collapsed with critical injuries.
Within moments, his colleagues moved to assist him. They evacuated him from the patrol position and sought urgent medical treatment. Nevertheless, the bullet had damaged vital organs. Medical personnel were unable to save him.
The shooting left another Ranger dead in a district already hit by deadly violence against security personnel. It also came only two months after the Bukit Sami checkpoint attack killed five Rangers.
For investigators, however, Sunday’s case remained centred on the evidence at Ban Kuching Ruepa. Security personnel continued gathering information from the area. Investigators were also examining the circumstances surrounding the single fatal shot.
No gunman or weapon identified as security forces continue search after fatal Rangae patrol attack
As the operation continued, no gunman had been publicly identified. No weapon had been recovered or publicly linked to the shooting. Officials had also not announced the number of attackers involved.
For now, the established sequence is narrow but clear. Sukran entered Ban Kuching Ruepa with a mobile Ranger patrol conducting an assigned security mission. His unit began establishing a temporary position under the “Rangae Protection 456935” plan.
