Village official Hamdee Jehsoh is gunned down in Yala before attackers strike Highway 410 hours later, burning machinery and a civilian car, smashing CCTV and scattering road spikes. Governor orders tighter security across Bannang Sata on Sunday now.
A deadly night of violence hit Yala’s Bannang Sata district before security forces moved in on Sunday. Assistant village headman Hamdee Jehsoh, 42, was shot dead in a roadside ambush. Hours later, attackers struck Highway 410, burning tyres, scattering road spikes and leaving a suspicious wired object. CCTV cameras were destroyed, construction machinery torched and a civilian vehicle burned. Governor Kongsakul Chantharat tightened security and ordered increased patrols. Meanwhile, police launched separate investigations into the murder and overnight attacks, with no link yet confirmed. Separately, two people were injured in another shooting involving rival youths in Yala city.
Yala Governor Kongsakul Chantharat ordered tighter security across Bannang Sata on Sunday after a killing and coordinated overnight property attacks. An assistant village headman was shot dead before several locations along Highway 410 were targeted hours later.
Attackers burned tyres, scattered road spikes, destroyed CCTV cameras and torched construction machinery. A civilian vehicle was also burned, while a suspicious wired object was left on the highway.
In response, police, soldiers, administrative officials and forensic teams deployed across Bannang Sata after daylight. Governor Kongsakul inspected the damaged areas and met agencies overseeing the security operation. He ordered stronger protection around infrastructure projects and increased patrols along exposed routes. Contractors were also instructed to secure heavy machinery left near construction sites.
Security tightened after village official is killed and Highway 410 sites are attacked hours later
As part of this, equipment can be moved near subdistrict administrative offices or mosques. Contractors were also asked to provide guards for machinery and work sites. Meanwhile, security personnel were ordered to increase patrols along infrastructure development routes. The measures followed several incidents across Bannang Sata within about six hours.
However, police have not established that the killing and subsequent Highway 410 attacks were connected. Investigators are examining both sets of incidents while keeping separate lines of inquiry open. No arrests were announced by Sunday, while the motive behind the fatal shooting remained unresolved.
The violence began late Saturday with the killing of assistant village headman Hamdee Jehsoh, 42. Mr Hamdee served at Moo 11, Ban Yilapan, in Taling Chan subdistrict. At approximately 8.30 pm to 9 pm, he was riding his motorcycle to visit his wife.
At least two gunmen reportedly waited near Ban Kuelong, Moo 2, in Taling Chan. They opened fire from the roadside as Mr Hamdee travelled through the area. A shotgun blast struck him once in the chest, killing him at the scene.
Soon afterwards, police secured the location and began collecting evidence around the ambush site. Yet several hours later, another series of incidents hit Bannang Sata. This time, attackers targeted several locations around the main Yala-Betong road.
Attackers hit Highway 410 with burning tyres, road spikes, arson and damaged surveillance cameras
Between approximately 1.55 am and 2.30 am, disturbances were reported around Ban Phong Yamu and Ban Ngo Kapo. Highway 410 became the central focus of the attacks. The road connects Yala with Betong district near Thailand’s border with Malaysia.
First, attackers burned vehicle tyres at points along the highway. They also scattered road spikes, or caltrops, across sections of the route. At another location, a suspicious black cylindrical object fitted with wires was placed on the roadway. Two CCTV cameras were also pulled down or damaged.
Notably, heavy construction equipment beside the highway became another target. The machinery belonged to Chin Wora Yala Construction, which is working on a four-lane road project. Attackers set equipment ablaze, leaving several construction vehicles damaged.
Initial accounts differed over the precise machinery involved. One report identified at least one excavator and several road rollers. Another police account referred to two excavators. Separately, a report said three construction vehicles were damaged, including an excavator and road rollers.
Beyond the construction sites, a civilian travelling through the district was also targeted. The resident was reportedly returning from Betong after travelling there to buy longan fruit. Attackers set the vehicle on fire during the return journey through Bannang Sata.
Police and forensic teams examine multiple attack scenes as governor orders stronger road security
By Sunday morning, investigators therefore faced several separate scenes around Highway 410. Police and soldiers moved into affected locations after daylight. Administrative personnel joined them, while forensic officers began examining burned machinery and damaged surveillance equipment.
At the same time, investigators inspected locations where tyres were burned and road spikes scattered. They also examined the suspicious wired object placed on the highway. Evidence was collected around the damaged construction machinery. The burned civilian vehicle became another scene requiring examination.
Against that backdrop, Governor Kongsakul moved to strengthen security around the road project. Highway 410 is an important transport route through southern Yala towards Betong. Infrastructure works along the road consequently became a major focus of Sunday’s security response.
Following his inspection, the governor met police, military and administrative agencies. He ordered an immediate increase in protection around construction projects. Heavy equipment was identified as particularly vulnerable following the overnight fires.
Under the new measures, contractors were told to move exposed machinery to more secure locations where possible. Provincial instructions identified areas near local administrative offices and mosques as possible locations. Chin Wora Yala Construction was also asked to provide security guards for its equipment.
Police investigate village official’s murder separately as patrols increase around construction routes
In parallel, security personnel were told to increase patrols around infrastructure development routes. Officials also sought public assistance in identifying suspicious activity. Residents were asked to report information which could help investigators locate those responsible.
While that operation continued, police pursued the murder investigation in Taling Chan. Bannang Sata Police Superintendent Police Colonel Atthapol Kulwongmanaso led officers examining the shooting scene on Sunday. Military personnel and local administrative officials also joined the investigation.
Forensic officers from Forensic Science Centre 10 collected evidence at the location. Investigators sought to reconstruct the ambush and determine how Mr Hamdee’s attackers approached. Police were also trying to identify the gunmen and establish their movements.
So far, investigators have not publicly established a motive for the killing. One line of inquiry concerns a possible personal dispute. Another examines whether the shooting was connected with unrest in Thailand’s southern border region. Neither possibility has been established.
Importantly, police have also stopped short of linking the murder with the Highway 410 incidents. Both occurred within Bannang Sata and were separated by only several hours. Even so, investigators have not confirmed that the same attackers were responsible.
Police examine separate evidence from fatal shotgun ambush and coordinated Highway 410 property attacks
The two episodes also differed significantly in their methods. Mr Hamdee’s killing was a targeted roadside ambush involving at least two gunmen. A shotgun was reportedly used, with one blast striking him in the chest.
By contrast, the later incidents involved multiple locations and several forms of property damage. Attackers obstructed the highway, damaged surveillance equipment and burned construction machinery. They also placed a suspicious object on the road and targeted a civilian vehicle.
For investigators, that leaves two substantial bodies of evidence to examine. Material recovered from the murder scene could help identify Mr Hamdee’s killers. Evidence gathered along Highway 410 could separately identify those responsible for the overnight disruption.
Additionally, damaged CCTV equipment forms part of the investigation. However, two cameras themselves were targeted during the attacks. The suspicious wired object also required examination, while scattered road spikes created hazards across the route.
By daylight, police were therefore handling numerous locations simultaneously. Security personnel also had to protect construction operations and other exposed sites. Provincial officials concentrated on securing machinery while forensic personnel continued collecting evidence.
Hours separate village official’s killing from Highway 410 attacks but police have not confirmed a link
The timing nevertheless places both investigations within a narrow overnight window. Mr Hamdee was killed between approximately 8.30 pm and 9 pm on Saturday. The Highway 410 incidents followed between approximately 1.55 am and 2.30 am Sunday.
Thus, only several hours separated the fatal ambush from the subsequent property attacks. Both occurred within Bannang Sata district. Yet officials have not announced that the incidents formed a single operation.
Within the murder inquiry, Mr Hamdee’s position is among the circumstances investigators are examining. He was a serving assistant village headman in Taling Chan. His duties placed him within the local administrative structure in Bannang Sata.
Nonetheless, police have not publicly identified his official position as the motive. Investigators have likewise kept open the possibility of a personal conflict. Both possibilities remained under examination on Sunday.
The Highway 410 investigation presents a wider geographical picture. Attackers operated at several points around Ban Phong Yamu and Ban Ngo Kapo. They used burning tyres and sharp road spikes to disrupt sections of the route.
Elsewhere, the suspicious wired cylinder was placed on the roadway. Two CCTV cameras were then damaged or destroyed. Construction machinery was also deliberately burned, causing damage to equipment used on the four-lane project.
Uncertainty remains over burned machinery as separate Yala city gun violence leaves two people injured
There remains some uncertainty over the machinery count. Initial accounts mentioned at least one excavator and several road rollers. Other reports referred to two excavators or three construction vehicles. However, several pieces of contractor equipment suffered fire damage.
Moreover, the civilian vehicle was burned during the same overnight period. Its owner had reportedly been returning from Betong after buying longan fruit. No additional deaths were reported during the Highway 410 attacks.
In the aftermath, provincial officials focused on preventing further damage around infrastructure sites. Governor Kongsakul ordered machinery moved away from vulnerable roadside positions. Contractors were asked to provide guards, while government patrols were strengthened.
On another front, further gun violence was reported separately in Yala city on Sunday. That incident involved youths pursuing rivals travelling on motorcycles. Shots were fired during the chase.
Two people were injured after their motorcycle crashed while they attempted to escape. Police subsequently began searching for those responsible. There has been no reported connection with the Bannang Sata incidents.
Yala city shooting remains separate as police pursue two investigations into Bannang Sata night violence
Accordingly, the Yala city shooting is being investigated separately. Sunday’s principal provincial security operation remained concentrated on Bannang Sata. There, investigators faced a fatal ambush alongside multiple scenes of overnight property damage.
By then, police were examining the murder scene, burned vehicles and damaged construction machinery. Forensic teams were also working around Highway 410. No arrests had been announced in either Bannang Sata investigation.
Nor had police publicly identified suspects behind the highway attacks. The motive for Mr Hamdee’s killing also remained undetermined. Officials were therefore pursuing two potentially separate cases emerging from the same violent night.
