The violence came before thousands of USS Abraham Lincoln sailors and Marines descend on Pattaya following the carrier’s central Iran war role. With beachfront sex workers already cleared, police now face a major security test amid geopolitical tensions and stateside reports of crew mental health problems.
Gunfire tore through the early morning calm outside a South Pattaya nightclub on Monday. Two men were wounded as terrified bystanders dropped to the ground. The shooting instantly placed senior police officers across Pattaya and Chonburi on alert. It struck just before thousands of American naval personnel were expected in the resort.
Pattaya City Police received the emergency call at 2.36 am on August 31. The shooting occurred outside a nightclub on South Pattaya Road in Nong Prue. In response, police officers, Bang Lamung officials and rescue volunteers raced to the venue. A large crowd had already gathered around the wounded men.
At the scene, volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation treated both victims. The first was 29-year-old Mongkol “Max” Khamprasong. Reports described him as a former volunteer with several official agencies. A bullet had struck his right calf and reportedly remained lodged inside.

Nearby, rescuers found 36-year-old Ratchaphon, widely known as “Ball”. He had suffered a gunshot wound to his left foot. Notably, he also had visible swelling around his face. Both men required hospital treatment after receiving emergency first aid.
Separately, Mongkol’s girlfriend, 35-year-old Atchara, became caught in the violence. One account said she remained at the scene and answered police questions. She told investigators that she did not know what started the dispute. She reportedly confirmed that the recovered pistol belonged to Mongkol.
Another report presented a more violent picture of Atchara’s involvement. According to that account, she tried to intervene as the confrontation intensified. She suffered a head injury and was reportedly covered in blood. Afterwards, she and Mongkol were taken to Pattaya City Hospital.
Ratchaphon was also transported for treatment following the gunfire. By then, friends from the opposing groups had begun gathering at the hospital. Their presence created fears that the confrontation could continue inside the medical facility. Hospital staff quickly arranged for the patients to be separated.
Glock pistol and bullet-hit pickup seized as witnesses describe panic outside Pattaya nightclub scene
Soon afterwards, Ratchaphon’s relatives requested his transfer to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. The two camps remained apart as police started piecing together the shooting. Meanwhile, investigators searched the street and inspected Mongkol’s Isuzu D-Max pickup. They found a bullet hole inside its driver-side door.
Officers also recovered a Glock 43 9mm pistol and ammunition. Crucially, Atchara reportedly identified the weapon as belonging to Mongkol. Police seized the gun, ammunition and other evidence for examination. The pickup remained central to both wounded men’s accounts.
According to witnesses, the trouble started with an argument between two groups inside the nightclub. Security staff intervened after the confrontation became heated. Both groups were ejected before the argument moved onto the street. Nevertheless, forcing them outside failed to end the dispute.
Several shots suddenly cracked through the area outside the venue. In an instant, customers and bystanders threw themselves towards the ground. Witnesses saw the panic but could not identify the original cause. They also could not explain how both principal figures suffered gunshot wounds.
At first, investigators had only fragments from the scene and stunned witnesses. The two wounded men then supplied sharply conflicting versions. Each account blamed the opposing side for the street confrontation. Their stories differed over the first punch, the surrounding crowd and the gunfire.
Mongkol claims self-defence while Ratchaphon says an old dispute ended in an unprovoked punch
For his part, Mongkol appeared intoxicated while answering police questions. He said he did not know who started the argument near his table. Furthermore, he claimed he did not know the people involved in the fight. He said he left the nightclub before members of the opposing group.
Mongkol then returned to his Isuzu pickup and attempted to leave. According to him, a group of men quickly surrounded the vehicle. He lowered the window and tried to speak with those blocking his route. Instead, he claimed, members of the group punched him and Atchara.
From there, Mongkol said the situation left him unable to drive away. He claimed he produced the Glock pistol to clear an escape route. He then fired while attempting to move the pickup through the crowd. Consequently, Mongkol described the shooting as an act of self-defence.
Against that account, Ratchaphon described Mongkol as the initial aggressor. He said he entered the nightclub and approached Mongkol’s table. His stated intention was to greet a senior acquaintance sitting with the group. Without warning, he claimed, Mongkol suddenly punched him.
Ratchaphon acknowledged that the pair had experienced problems before Monday’s confrontation. Even so, he declined to disclose details of their earlier dispute. The punch then drew other members of both groups into the clash. Security staff eventually forced everyone involved from the premises.
Rival accounts leave police probing three shots, two wounded men and a still-unexplained calf injury
Once outside, the two groups continued following each other. Mongkol climbed into his Isuzu pickup and prepared to leave. At that point, Ratchaphon moved in front of the vehicle. He said he wanted to speak with Mongkol about the confrontation.
Moments later, Ratchaphon claimed Mongkol produced the pistol from inside the pickup. He said Mongkol fired three shots while driving away. One bullet struck the back of Ratchaphon’s left foot. Ratchaphon denied carrying a firearm during the incident.
In contrast, Mongkol said he fired only because his vehicle was surrounded. Ratchaphon said he merely stood in front of the pickup to talk. He also denied knowing how Mongkol was shot in the calf. The unexplained wound became another central question for investigators.
As a result, police must determine who attacked first and who surrounded the vehicle. They must also establish how Mongkol received his own gunshot wound. In addition, investigators must confirm how many rounds left the Glock. The direction and sequence of those shots will also require examination.
Both men were detained while police continued gathering evidence. Officers said personal backgrounds and volunteer connections would not affect the investigation. Instead, everyone responsible would face the full legal process. Charges will follow after police establish the sequence of events.
Nightclub footage, seized Glock and gun-filled Facebook profile become central to police inquiry
In parallel, detectives began collecting security recordings from inside the nightclub. They also sought footage covering the street, entrance and parked pickup. Those recordings could expose how the original argument began. They could also show each group’s movements before the shots.
Forensic officers will examine the Glock 43 and its ammunition. Likewise, evidence from the weapon will be compared with findings from the pickup. The bullet hole inside the driver-side door could help establish firing positions. Evidence from both wounded men will form another part of that comparison.
Beyond the scene, police examined Mongkol’s Facebook account. They found posts and video clips involving firearms training. Other photographs appeared to show him wearing clothing resembling an official uniform. Some images also displayed what appeared to be an agency identification card.
On another front, the account contained photographs of Mongkol meeting senior police officers. Investigators will determine whether any of those posts relate to the shooting. His profile also suggested considerable familiarity with firearms and shooting. Police said it indicated that he frequently carried a gun.
Despite those discoveries, investigators said physical evidence would decide the case. Witness statements, medical findings and security recordings will be compared closely. The recovered pistol will also undergo detailed examination. No final account has yet been accepted by police.
Pattaya clears beachfront sex workers as police prepare for thousands of American naval visitors
