A Satun immigration officer identifies Frenchman Ibrahim, 40, on an Interpol Red Notice issued at Belgium’s request. The discovery triggers a Patong operation, where Phuket police arrest him over a drug trafficking case. His Thai visa is then revoked.

A 40-year-old Frenchman wanted by Belgian police in an international drug trafficking investigation was arrested in Patong, Phuket, on Tuesday. Identified as Ibrahim, the suspect was tracked down after an alert immigration officer in Satun matched his identity to an Interpol Red Notice issued at Belgium’s request. A joint operation subsequently located him outside his accommodation in the busy tourist resort. Immigration Bureau 6 revoked his permission to remain in Thailand, leaving him facing further legal proceedings and possible extradition to Belgium. Meanwhile, immigration police have announced tighter checks on foreign fugitives and visa overstayers across southern Thailand.

A 40-year-old Frenchman wanted by Belgian police in an international drug trafficking investigation was arrested in Phuket on Tuesday, 20 October. The suspect, identified as Ibrahim, was traced to accommodation in Patong following an Interpol alert.

Crucially, an immigration officer in Satun identified him as the individual named in a Red Notice issued at Belgium’s request. The discovery triggered a joint operation involving immigration police in both southern provinces.

Officers subsequently located Ibrahim outside his accommodation and took him into custody. His permission to remain in Thailand was revoked, while further legal proceedings are pending.

Satun immigration officer identifies French suspect wanted by Belgium, triggering a Phuket manhunt

The arrest began with intelligence uncovered by an immigration officer in Satun province. The officer established that Ibrahim matched the French national sought by Belgian law enforcement.

Notably, the Interpol Red Notice concerned suspected trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The discovery prompted Satun Immigration to alert its counterparts in Phuket, where the suspect was believed to be living.

Police Colonel Charoenphong Khantilo, spokesperson for Immigration Bureau 6, confirmed the operation and the international police alert. He said Phuket Immigration received information identifying the wanted Frenchman.

Investigators then established that Ibrahim was living in the Patong area. In response, officers began tracing his whereabouts and identified accommodation where he was believed to be staying.

The operation involved cooperation between immigration officers in Satun and Phuket. Satun officers supplied the information linking Ibrahim to the Belgian investigation. Meanwhile, Phuket investigators pursued the intelligence and located the Frenchman. Their enquiries eventually led them to accommodation in Patong, one of Phuket’s principal tourist districts.

Phuketpolice immigration officers locate Ibrahim outside his Patong home and confirm he’s their man

On Tuesday, 20 October, Phuket Immigration officers arrived at the identified premises. They spotted a man matching the description provided through Interpol. At the time, Ibrahim was standing outside a room at the accommodation.

Officers approached him, identified themselves and began questioning him. He confirmed his identity before accompanying police to the Phuket Immigration investigation office.

There, investigators conducted further checks using the Immigration Bureau’s computer database. They examined Ibrahim’s personal information and compared his documents with the details supplied through Interpol.

The records confirmed that he was the individual wanted by Belgian law enforcement. Consequently, officers held the French national while senior immigration officials considered action against his permission to remain in Thailand.

The Belgian investigation concerns suspected illegal trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. However, the available police information does not identify the drugs involved. Neither does it establish their quantities, the suspected trafficking routes or the dates of the offences. Separately, Thai officials have not disclosed whether the Belgian investigation involves other suspects.

Immigration Bureau 6 commander revokes French suspect’s permission to stay under Thai immigration law

Ibrahim has been identified publicly only by a first name or pseudonym. His full legal name has not been released. Nevertheless, immigration officers confirmed his French nationality and age through their checks.

They also established that his identifying details matched the information supplied under the Interpol Red Notice.

Following that confirmation, Immigration Bureau 6 moved to revoke his permission to remain in Thailand. Police Major General Chuthares Yingyongdamrongsakul, commander of Immigration Bureau 6, ordered the cancellation.

The action was reportedly taken under Section 12(7) of Thailand’s Immigration Act 1979. As part of the procedure, officers informed Ibrahim of the revocation and explained his legal rights.

The Frenchman was then held at Phuket Immigration pending further proceedings. Accordingly, his previous permission to remain in the kingdom was no longer valid. The action was taken under Thai immigration law rather than following any conviction in the Belgian drug case. That investigation remains a matter for Belgian law enforcement and the relevant judicial proceedings.

Interpol Red Notice leaves Belgian extradition proceedings unresolved as Thai police examine next steps

An Interpol Red Notice requests that police worldwide locate and provisionally arrest a wanted individual. Such notices are issued pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action. However, they are not international arrest warrants.

Individual countries determine how to respond under their domestic laws. In this case, Thai officers used immigration procedures after confirming Ibrahim’s identity.

The next stage of the case remains unresolved in the available reports. Belgium has not been reported as having secured an extradition order or arranged the suspect’s transfer. Furthermore, Thai officials have not announced any timetable for sending Ibrahim to Belgian custody. No criminal charges connected with the Belgian drug investigation have been reported against him in Thailand.

Officials have also withheld details of Ibrahim’s immigration history. They have not disclosed when he entered Thailand or how long he lived in Phuket. Likewise, the type of immigration permission he previously held has not been identified. The reports do not establish whether he had been living in Patong throughout his time in the kingdom.

Patong arrest leads to tighter immigration checks on foreign fugitives and visa overstayers in Thailand

The police account describes a straightforward operation at the suspect’s accommodation. Officers found Ibrahim standing outside a room and approached him for questioning.

Subsequently, they transferred him to the immigration investigation office for identity checks. There was no reported resistance, pursuit or confrontation during the arrest. Nor have officials announced any seizures of drugs, money or other property.

The operation nevertheless involved several distinct stages. First, an immigration officer in Satun identified the Frenchman as the subject of the Belgian Red Notice. That information was passed to Phuket Immigration, which established his location in Patong. Officers then approached Ibrahim at his accommodation and verified his identity. Finally, Immigration Bureau 6 revoked his permission to stay after confirming the international alert.

Following the arrest, immigration officials announced tighter checks on foreign nationals wanted by overseas law enforcement. The measures will also target foreigners who remain in Thailand after their immigration permission expires. In addition, the bureau urged members of the public to report information concerning suspicious foreign nationals. Reports can be submitted through the Immigration Bureau hotline on 1178.

Immigration Bureau 6 confirms Frenchman’s arrest as Belgian drug investigation remains outstanding

Police Colonel Charoenphong confirmed that the operation formed part of Immigration Bureau 6’s enforcement work. The bureau covers immigration operations across southern Thailand, including Phuket and Satun. In this instance, intelligence from Satun led directly to the identification and arrest of a wanted foreign national in Phuket.

The arrest was reported on Wednesday, 21 October, following the operation the previous day. By then, officers had confirmed Ibrahim’s identity and revoked his immigration permission. However, the Belgian criminal proceedings remained separate from the action taken by Thai immigration police.

For now, the 40-year-old Frenchman remains subject to further immigration procedures. Officials have not confirmed whether he will be deported or face formal extradition proceedings. Any transfer to Belgian custody would require the relevant legal arrangements.

The case began with an immigration officer in Satun recognising Ibrahim as the man wanted under an Interpol Red Notice. Within the subsequent operation, Phuket officers located him in Patong and confirmed his identity against international police records. Immigration Bureau 6 then cancelled his permission to remain in Thailand. The French national now faces further proceedings while Belgium’s drug trafficking investigation remains outstanding.
