Teenage Thai rock sensation Nene Royal returned to a heroine’s welcome in Phuket on Friday after Mel B’s Golden Buzzer propelled her directly into the America’s Got Talent final. The 16-year-old singer and guitarist now resumes her studies before returning to the United States for a September 22 appointment with destiny. Backed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Thai tourism officials and a mobilised Thai diaspora across America, the former Naka Market performer will carry Thailand’s hopes onto one of the world’s biggest television stages.
Nene Royal returned to Thailand on Friday night after winning direct entry into the America’s Got Talent final. The 16-year-old singer and guitarist landed at Phuket International Airport at about 9.45 pm. Her family and personal manager travelled with her. Outside the arrival area, crowds gathered to give the Phuket teenager a heroine’s welcome.
However, Nene’s homecoming marks only a short break from the competition. She returned to continue her studies and prepare for the largest performance of her career. On September 22, she will compete in the America’s Got Talent final. The appearance gives her an appointment with destiny before millions of American television viewers.
Her decisive breakthrough came during Tuesday’s live quarter-final in the United States. Nene performed Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” while playing guitar. The performance combined forceful vocals with the instrumental ability behind her growing profile. Notably, it delivered the strongest result available during the live round.
Mel B sends Nene directly to the final after Golden Buzzer sparks tears on the live American stage
Judge Mel B praised Nene’s voice, guitar playing, appearance, energy and stage presence. She then pressed the Live Show Golden Buzzer. As a result, Nene advanced directly into the final without depending on the public vote. She also bypassed the semi-final stage.
Overcome by the result, Nene burst into tears on stage. She immediately embraced her father as the audience celebrated. In turn, the Golden Buzzer converted a quarter-final appearance into guaranteed final qualification. Her next competitive performance will now take place on September 22.
The result marked another sharp advance from Nene’s earlier performances at Phuket’s Naka Market. Today, she is preparing for one of American television’s largest entertainment stages. Her progress has rested on three performances during different stages of the competition. Each appearance required vocals and guitar playing.
Initially, Nene captured international attention during her televised audition. She performed “Zombie” by Irish rock band The Cranberries. All four judges voted to send her into the next round. Subsequently, footage of the performance spread widely across social media.
Three rock performances carry Nene into final as PM moves to support her global television campaign
Even so, the successful audition did not guarantee a place in the live competition. Nene still faced the Judges’ Callbacks and another selection. During that stage, she performed “Hysteria” by British rock band Muse. Once again, she combined electric guitar with powerful vocals.
That performance secured her position among 44 acts chosen for the live shows. Thereafter, she travelled from Phuket to the United States for the quarter-final. Her third performance produced the Golden Buzzer from Mel B. Accordingly, three rock songs carried her from audition to final.
In parallel, Nene’s growing profile attracted direct support from Thailand’s government. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul praised her talent, determination and contribution to Thailand’s international image. He welcomed Nene and her family to Government House on July 14. Cabinet members, tourism officials and reporters attended the event.
Mr Anutin first watched Nene’s viral audition while carrying out official duties in Malaysia. In response, he instructed tourism officials to examine practical government assistance. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul then led Nene’s delegation to Government House. Tourism Authority of Thailand representatives also joined the meeting.
Anutin presents Amazing Thailand gifts as government backs Nene’s travel and tourism publicity campaign
During the gathering, Mr Anutin presented Nene with an Amazing Thailand lapel pin. He also gave her an Amazing Thailand souvenir set. Separately, Nene performed “Zombie” before ministers, officials and reporters. She again sang while accompanying herself on guitar.
The meeting also included a performance by the Prime Minister. On another front, Mr Anutin joined Nene for “Som San” by Thai rock band Loso. Nene played guitar during the performance. Afterwards, Mr Anutin praised her ability, courage and ambition.
The Prime Minister said Nene’s achievement demonstrated the potential of Thailand’s young people. Furthermore, he said music and creativity could connect audiences across national boundaries. Her appearances had also presented a positive image of Thailand. Against that backdrop, the government identified her international exposure as a tourism opportunity.
Mr Surasak later announced support for Nene’s continued participation in the American competition. As part of this, the government offered assistance with competition-related expenses. Those costs included travel and future performances. Tourism officials also prepared publicity aimed at eligible voters inside the United States.
Thai diaspora mobilises American voters as tourism officials prepare Nene for an international role
Only eligible American viewers could vote during the live rounds. Consequently, overseas Thai communities became an important part of Nene’s quarter-final campaign. Community groups encouraged eligible residents to register and support her. They also distributed information explaining the programme’s voting procedures.
Meanwhile, the Tourism Authority of Thailand began considering Nene for future promotional work. Planned publicity would promote tourism, Thai soft power and the country’s international image. In particular, officials highlighted her references to “Phuket, Thailand” and “Amazing Thailand”. Those references reached large overseas audiences through her television appearances.
Beyond government support, the Thai diaspora mounted a visible campaign in California. Nene arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on August 19. Thai-American Association of Southern California president Keith Chatprapachai welcomed her with flowers. Community representatives and supporters also attended the reception.
Ahead of her arrival, Thai organisations had coordinated their activities through meetings in Los Angeles. The Royal Thai Consulate-General served as a focal point for the campaign. Officials, community leaders and organisation representatives discussed support for Nene’s appearance. Elsewhere, Thai communities in several American states shared voting information.
Diaspora supporters give Nene a warm California send-off before her triumphant homecoming in Phuket
The campaign targeted Thai, American and other eligible supporters throughout the United States. Crucially, those voters controlled advancement from the live rounds. Mel B’s Golden Buzzer eventually removed Nene from that public contest. Nevertheless, diaspora support continued after she secured direct final qualification.
That backing remained evident when Nene and her family prepared to leave California. Representatives from the Thai-American Association of Southern California attended the airport send-off. Los Angeles Thai community members joined them. Alongside them, Thai and Filipino fans gathered to offer encouragement.
“Pangpond” from Luv2Eat Thai Bistro was also present at the departure. Supporters posed for photographs with Nene and her family. Later, they watched the group begin its journey back to Thailand. Within hours, another reception was forming at Phuket International Airport.
Back in Phuket, Nene arrived with a guaranteed place in the final. She also carried support from the government and overseas Thai communities. For now, her schedule includes schoolwork and preparations for September 22. Her stay in Thailand will therefore combine education, rehearsal and final planning.
