A 29-year-old American faces attempted murder and robbery charges after slashing a Bangkok police officer’s neck with a utility knife during a convenience-store escape. Alexander Troy Lopez was captured following a multi-station manhunt towards Suea Pa Plaza. Police recovered the suspected weapon, while hospital testing detected methamphetamine in his system. Further blood tests could later bring additional criminal charges.

A young American thief slashed a Bangkok police officer’s neck with a utility knife during a dramatic Saturday morning escape. The brutal attack followed a convenience-store theft at the Phadung Dao branch. The suspect then raced towards Suea Pa Plaza as police units launched a manhunt. Officers later captured him and recovered the suspected weapon.

Police identified the arrested man as Alexander Troy Lopez, a 29-year-old United States citizen. Following his capture, Lopez gave inconsistent statements and refused to cooperate fully. Notably, police suspected he was intoxicated and sent him for hospital testing. The results revealed methamphetamine in his system.

The incident began at 9.30 am on August 22, 2026. Police Lieutenant Colonel Kris Homkhajorn received the initial theft report. He serves as an investigative officer at Phlapphlachai 2 Police Station. In response, he coordinated with patrol officers and directed them towards the convenience store.

Meanwhile, another police officer was already passing through the area. Police Lieutenant Prasarn Somkane was conducting a motorcycle patrol near the store. He serves as Deputy Traffic Inspector at Phra Ratchawang Police Station. At that point, a citizen alerted him to the theft taking place nearby.

Police Lieutenant Prasarn then witnessed the crime directly in front of him. Without delay, he intervened and attempted to stop the foreign suspect. However, Lopez fled from the store and tried to escape through the surrounding district. The motorcycle officer immediately went after him.

During the pursuit, the theft investigation suddenly became a violent armed confrontation. Lopez was carrying a utility knife as he fled. He pulled out the blade and slashed Police Lieutenant Prasarn across the neck. Consequently, the officer suffered an injury while performing his duties.

Lopez then broke away from the injured officer and continued his escape. Moments later, he headed towards Suea Pa Plaza. The flight placed the armed suspect beyond the immediate convenience-store scene. As a result, police expanded their response and mobilised additional personnel.

The initial police bulletin provided no further details about Police Lieutenant Prasarn’s neck wound. Separately, it did not state whether he required hospital treatment. No update was provided about his condition after the attack. Nevertheless, police treated the knife assault as attempted murder.

Metropolitan Police Division 6 deployed officers to hunt down the fleeing American. In parallel, personnel from Phlapphlachai 1 Police Station joined the operation. Chakkrawat Police Station also sent officers into the search. Several Bangkok police units were therefore pursuing the same armed suspect.

The search followed Lopez’s reported flight towards Suea Pa Plaza. Yet the bulletin did not reveal how far he travelled before being caught. It also withheld the exact location of his arrest. Even so, the combined police operation ended with officers taking him into custody.

During the arrest, police seized a utility knife from Lopez. Investigators identified it as the weapon used against Police Lieutenant Prasarn. Accordingly, the knife became a key piece of physical evidence in the attempted murder investigation. Police retained the blade while building the case against the American.

American gives inconsistent answers before hospital test detects methamphetamine in his system

The original theft remains central to the sequence of events. However, police did not identify what Lopez took from the convenience store. They also released no valuation for the stolen property. Furthermore, the bulletin did not confirm whether the missing items were recovered.

Afterwards, investigators attempted to question Lopez about the theft and knife attack. His replies were inconsistent, according to the police account. In addition, officers said he was uncooperative during the initial questioning. His behaviour raised suspicions that he might be under the influence of drugs.

As part of the investigation, police transported Lopez to the Police Hospital. Medical personnel then conducted a drug screening. Crucially, the test detected methamphetamine in his system. The substance is found in both methamphetamine tablets and crystalline methamphetamine.

Crystal meth is the crystalline form of the powerful stimulant. Still, police did not specify which form Lopez had consumed. The report also did not state when he had taken the substance. Nor did it identify the quantity present in his system.

On another front, police are preparing to send Lopez for blood testing. Further medical confirmation will be required before officers consider additional charges. Thus, the hospital screening forms only the first stage of the drug investigation. Any further action will depend upon the confirmed medical findings.

American faces attempted murder and robbery charges as police investigate positive meth test

No narcotics were reported among the items seized during the arrest. Instead, police confirmed only the recovery of the utility knife. The positive methamphetamine finding came from testing performed after Lopez entered custody. This distinction remains important as investigators consider possible additional offences.

Initially, police recorded two serious charges against the American. Lopez faces attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and robbery. The attempted murder accusation arises from the slash across Police Lieutenant Prasarn’s neck. The robbery count stems from the convenience-store incident and ensuing confrontation.

At the time of the attack, Police Lieutenant Prasarn was performing police duties. He had received information from a citizen and witnessed the theft himself. He then intervened before pursuing the fleeing suspect. Subsequently, the American used the knife to strike the officer and escape.

The case crossed several Bangkok police jurisdictions within a short period. Phlapphlachai 2 Police Station received the first report and coordinated the initial response. By contrast, Police Lieutenant Prasarn serves at Phra Ratchawang Police Station. He entered the unfolding incident after encountering it during his motorcycle patrol.

Multi-station Bangkok manhunt captures American after knife attack but key case details remain unclear

Once Lopez fled, the operation widened again. Metropolitan Police Division 6 mobilised alongside Phlapphlachai 1 and Chakkrawat police stations. Together, those units hunted for the suspect after the neck slashing. Ultimately, their search ended with his arrest and the weapon seizure.

The police account leaves several details undisclosed. For instance, it provides no description of the property taken from the store. Likewise, it gives no precise location for the final arrest. It also provides no full medical report concerning the injured officer.

Even with those details outstanding, police have set out the central sequence. A reported convenience-store theft brought Police Lieutenant Prasarn into the confrontation. Then, the fleeing suspect slashed his neck and ran towards Suea Pa Plaza. Finally, officers captured Lopez and recovered the suspected knife.

Investigators are now preparing the evidence for further proceedings. At the same time, medical personnel will conduct confirmatory blood testing. Those results could lead police to consider additional charges. For now, Lopez faces attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and robbery.
